Severe weather uprooted trees and downed power lines as the storm rolled across the Cedar Valley and surrounding counties before sunrise this morning (Thursday, May 26, 2016).

High wind uprooted trees, which blocked several area roadways. Scattered outages were reported across the region.

At 7:30 a.m., utility crews were working to restore electricity to more then 5,000 people in the Cedar Valley and surrounding areas. Mid-American Energy reported more than 3,000 customers were without power in Waterloo (1,172) and other areas of Black Hawk County. Alliant Energy reported nearly 2,150 customers were in the dark in Benton (396), Buchanan (414) and Fayette counties (1,331).

By 10:45 a.m., more than 1,000 Mid-American customers were still without electricity in Black Hawk County, including 421 in Waterloo. Alliant Energy reported that power had been restored to all but about 555 customers in the three county region. Most of Alliant's outages -- 378 -- were in Fayette County.

High winds caused quite a bit of damage in Evansdale, where a number of large trees were uprooted. The hardest hit area was a neighborhood near the Casebeer Heights area on the north side of Interstate 380/U.S. Highway 20.

Some dugout roofs and scoreboards were also blown down at the Deerwood Park softball complex in Evansdale.

Maple Lanes Bowling Center on University Ave. in Waterloo sustained some significant damage in the storm. Most of the building's front-side overhang collapsed in the high wind. The debris -- mainly cement blocks -- damaged an unoccupied car that was parked near the building.

The high winds also blew over two semis. One was travelling on U.S. Highway 63 near Hudson and the other was parked outside the Isle Capri Hotel Waterloo casino.

The National Weather Service reported 60 m.p.h. wind gusts in Oelwein and 42 m.p.h. gusts in Edgewood.
