Only a late first period flurry allowed the Saints to take the lead into the locker room at intermission. Jacob Benson recorded a power play goal at 16:53, followed up by Boeing’s effort at 19:00, stuffing the puck into an open side off a turnover. For good measure, Willie Knierim completed a partial breakaway 30 seconds later. Waterloo had earlier taken a 1-0 lead with a Brandon Montour power play strike at 13:28. The Hawks had an edge in play for much of the period, outshooting the Saints 13-7.

Dubuque extended their lead with a goal by Sasha Larocque from the right circle at 3:52 of the second. The Black Hawks began a comeback at 13:52 during the final seconds of a power play; that’s when Brock Boeser rattled a shot into the net off the iron. Ruslan Rakhmatov brought Waterloo to within one before intermission, flipping a long shot from the right point through traffic and inside the long-side post at 17:57.

The Saints burst through for four more goals in the third period – separated by just over five minutes – and eliminated any question about the outcome. Dodd and Boeing scored on successive transition opportunities at 3:06 and 3:38. Dylan Gambrell added another at 6:45, before Dodd capped the scoring by the home team during a power play at 8:07. Tom Novak added one more Waterloo goal with 5:53 remaining

The Hawks return home Saturday for a tilt with the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m. Cheer for the team in camouflage jerseys, presented by American Pattern & CNC Works, and enjoy Ladies’ Night at the rink sponsored by Capri College.
