Just like making resolutions, wearing party hats, and counting down the final seconds of the old year, watching the puck drop at Young Arena is a well-established Cedar Valley tradition.

The Waterloo Black Hawks’ annual New Year’s Eve game against the Madison Capitols begins at 6:05 on Saturday, presented by 97.7 KCRR, The Classic Rock Station. Gates open at 5:05 PM.

“We welcome everyone to join us in celebrating the start of 2017. I would like to draw everyone’s attention to the 6:05 PM opening faceoff time. Last season, we moved the game up to 6:05 and received a lot of positive feedback, but I want to make sure none of our fans miss out on any of the action.” - Waterloo Black Hawks VP of Business Operations Joe Greene

Kids can plan to take part in a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration. A free Kid’s Party Zone will be open for families behind the east goal throughout the New Year’s Eve game. Children can create their own sign to support the team, enjoy free face-painting, play games, and meet a balloon artist. With more activities and attractions being organized, parents are encouraged to visit the team’s Facebook and Twitter pages during the coming days for updates.

This year’s December 31st festivities will also mark the one year anniversary of the Coors Light Cold Zone on the Young Arena concourse above Section B. Fans age 21 and older can celebrate with a “3-2-1” New Year’s Eve Countdown special during Happy Hour until 5:45 PM. Cocktails will be just $3.00, beers will be $2.00, and sodas will be $1.00. Champagne will also be on special throughout the game. And start the New Year with a new flavor; the Black Hawks and United Beverage will offer samples of new items while registering fans to win prizes with random drawings throughout the evening.

The Hawks have played a New Year’s Eve home game every winter since closing 1998 and ringing in 1999.
