Panther Cabell Stays Perfect, UNI Falls to Iowa State, 24-12
UNI wrestler Blaize Cabell earned his 12th consecutive win to stay perfect in duals and Dylan Peters grabbed a first-period fall to crack UNI’s top 10 for career falls, but the Panthers fell 24-12 to Iowa State on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
UNI is now 7-8 in duals and remains 4-3 in the MAC. Iowa State improved to 10-2 and is 2-1 in the Big 12.
ISU took the first three matches before No. 10 Cabell grabbed a 5-2 decision at heavyweight. After a scoreless first period, Cabell sparked his offense with an escape early in the second. A review erased ISU’s Quean Smith’s first escape to keep Cabell up 3-0 to start the third. Cabell would go on to win 5-2 and get the momentum rolling for the Peters at 125 pounds.
Peters worked on a fall for nearly a minute when he finally got the call with three seconds left in the match. Peters’ fall in 2 minutes, 57 seconds gets Peters in the UNI record books for a second time. With 28 career falls, Peters cracked the top 10 for most falls in a career among all Panthers. He earned 18 last season to tied for fourth among Panthers with most falls in a single season.
The momentum stalled for the Panthers though, as ISU will get the next three matches before Jarrett Jensen would get a win for UNI at 157 pounds.
Jensen extended his win streak to three with a 4-2 decision over Luke Goettl, a two-time NCAA qualifier.
ISU picked up the remaining bouts to win 24-12.
UP NEXT: UNI will host its final dual of season against Old Dominion 7 p.m. Feb. 20. The Panthers will recognize their two seniors, Taylor Kettman and Basil Minto.
