Oelwein Mayor Resigns Amid Sex Charges

The mayor of Oelwein, charged with multiple counts of sexually abusing two young girls, has tendered his resignation.

36 year old Jason Manus was arrested August 11th following the investigation into the alleged sexual assaults of a 9 year old girl and a 14 year old girl that happened about 4 years ago.

Manus faces four charges of third degree sex abuse and 1 count of 2nd degree sex abuse. He was held in the Fayette County Jail on $65,000 bond, but was released after posting bond during his court hearing on Wednesday.

According to sources, Manus has now submitted his resignation as mayor of Oelwein. The Oelwein City Council, which meets tonight, will consider a motion to accept that resignation. It will be among the first items on the council's agenda; the meeting starts at 6pm.

Later in the meeting, the Oelwein council will set a date to decide on the manner for filling the mayor's seat. The council may either appoint someone to fill the position until the next election, or call for a special city-wide election.

Mayor pro-tem and city council member Peggy Sherrets will be in charge of tonight's meeting.
