The Oelwein High School has been selected by the Iowa Department of Education to serve as a mentor school for other area schools that want to improve their learning
environment and adult to student relationships. The Oelwein High School has been working hard the last four years to improve and increase the relationship piece of the school environment. By increasing the relationship piece our students report on a yearly survey that Oelwein High School has a safe and meaningful learning environment.

We have set an action plan each year and our data has increased significantly each year. We have incorporated Character Development into our required classes as well as having meaningful conversations in our homerooms dealing with pride, self esteem, perseverance to name a few. The goal is to have 100% of our students have at least one adult in our building that they feel safe and feel that they can talk to. Most students report they have more than one, which is great and shows we are heading in the right direction.

Another activity that we are engaging in is our positive parent communication. All staff take time each month to call, email, or have a conversation with several parents telling them something positive about their child. Often times in the past the only communication coming from the school was something negative so we are working hard to improve that piece and build positive relationships with parents as well.

The staff has been working very hard and it is fantastic for the Iowa Department of Ed to take notice and even more importantly the positive impact this work has had on Oelwein High School.

GREAT TO BE A HUSKY!
