The new mayor of Oelwein has taken the oath of office, and now the city council must find a suitable replacement for a vacant council seat.

At last night's (Monday) regular meeting, councilperson and mayor pro-tem Peggy Sherrets resigned from her post to represent Ward 1, so she may serve as mayor.

Sherrets won a four-way race for the city's top spot last Tuesday, in a special election called for by residents who signed a petition.

The mayor post was left vacant when 36 year old Jason Manus resigned in mid-term, after being charged with five sex abuse counts involving young girls.

The council initially decided to appoint Sherrets mayor, however citizens requested the special election, by petition.

After giving up her council seat Monday night, Sherrets was sworn-in as mayor; the mayor pro-tem position, which Sherrets held, was accepted by councilman Ben Weber.

As for Sherrets former post, the council decided to make an appointment for Ward 1 at the next regular meeting on October 27th.

Again, citizens may petition for another special election.
