A popular Northeast Iowa attraction will be featured on the first of a series of coins launched by the U.S. Mint in 2017.

An image of Effigy Mounds National Monument, located north of Marquette near Harpers Ferry, will be stamped onto quarters. The new coins will be released this year, under the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters program.

The design is an aerial view of the Monument, showcasing two bears and one bird effigy mound, from the Marching Bear Group, located in the South Unit of Effigy Mounds.

Two events have been scheduled to mark the launch of the new quarter: a Coin Collector Forum will be held February 6th at 5:30 p.m. at the Effigy Mounds Visitor Center.

The main event will be the Quarter Launch and Coin Exchange, taking place February 7th at 10 a.m. at the Waukon High School Gym.

Attendees may exchange $10 for a roll of the newly-minted quarters. Children 18 and younger will receive a free Effigy Mounds quarter.
