Fans heard Kelsea Ballerini sing "Peter Pan" at the 2016 ACM Awards on Sunday (April 3), and in advance of the show, the rising star released the song's accompanying music video.

Filmed just outside of Las Vegas, Nev., the clip is full of emotion, adrenaline and the wisdom of knowing when to walk away. Director Kristin Barlowe worked with Ballerini to spin "Peter Pan" into a visual story.

The video begins with a voiceover by Ballerini (very similar in concept to Taylor Swift's "Out of the Woods" video), who says, "He always had to feel the rush, the heartbeat, the speed. He had a passion for things he knew could hurt him, but he never stayed long enough to get hurt. Sometimes, I guess he found that feeling with me. And the other times, he found it being lost."

Ballerini's romantic interest in the clip is a handsome daredevil whose wild side is exciting, but his mindset of living with danger was the emotional tipping point in the relationship.

"I loved the idea of having a song about a breakup that wasn't some dramatic cheating or scandal moment," Ballerini says in a press release. "It's the kind of thing where one person just can't emotionally match the other, and that's a sad kind of ending and heartbreak … and that's what I wanted this song and video to capture.

"Sometimes the thrills of life or youth overrule the thrill of love until someone is truly ready to be in a relationship," she continues. "This was a fun way to show that side in the video.”

The "Peter Pan" video includes aerial stunts (performed by the aviation stunt team at Vegas's Sky Combat Ace), a parachute, fast driving and more.

"Life with him was an adventure," Ballerini says at the end of the music video. "But sometimes, an adventure just has to end for a new one to begin."

"Peter Pan" is Ballerini's third single. It follows up her No. 1 hits "Love Me Like You Mean It" and "Dibs." The singer is the reigning ACM Awards New Female Vocalist of the Year and will be hitting the road with Rascal Flatts in June.
