Jimmy Gustin Wins All Star Invitational During Super Nationals
Jimmy Gustin has filled that empty space in his IMCA Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s trophy case.
Gustin led all 30 laps of Friday’s Fast Shafts All-Star Modified Invitational at Boone Speedway.
“This is awesome,” said Gustin, also the 2010 Super Nationals champion and 2007 and 2011 Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions winner. “This is the only race I hadn’t won at Boone and I really wanted to win it. I can’t say how much this means to me.”
The victory paid $1,000, plus another $750 in lap money.
Gustin started seventh and shot to the front his first time around the oval. Keith White headed the pursuit but was already half a straightaway behind the leader when the first caution came out on lap nine.
2012 All-Star winner Jordan Grabouski took over second on lap 13 and defending race winner Kyle Strickler moved into third on the next circuit.
Neither was able to mount a challenge to Gustin. Their last restart opportunity came on lap 17 and Grabouskl was six car lengths off the pace at the checkers.
“When you know Jordan Grabouski and Kyle Strickler are behind you on a restart, your heart is pounding,” Gustin said. “I just ran the top as hard as I could.”
“I didn’t want any late yellows and I didn’t want any lapped traffic,” he added. “I was just happy to get the race over.”
Strickler, Ryan Ruter and Jason Wolla rounded out the top five.
A record-tying 15 states were represented in the starting field of 30. Friday’s checkers also put Gustin on the ballot for the 2016 Invitational.
