Iowa State men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg is on the road to recovery following successful open heart surgery on Friday (April 17, 2015).

Hoiberg had his aortic valve replaced during an operation that was performed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The new mechanical valve will require Hoiberg to be on blood thinners the remainder of his life.

“Everything went very well,” said Dr. Rakesh Suri, the cardiothoracic surgeon who performed the procedure. “The operation was a success and Mr. Hoiberg is in recovery and doing very well himself.”

The Cyclones' 42-year-old coach is expected to be hospitalized for a week, before returning home to continue recovery. The anticipated recovery time is four-to-six weeks.

In a statement released through Iowa State University's athletic department, Hoiberg's family thanked "the many individuals who have prayed for Fred and shared their support." The family also thanked the medical staff at Mayo Clinic.

Hoiberg recently finished his fifth season guiding his alma mater. He has led Iowa State to a school-record four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 Conference tournament titles. Hoiberg owns a 115-56 career record.
