Authorities are trying to determine what caused the death of an inmate, who was found unresponsive in a cell at the Grundy County jail Thursday night (Jan. 28, 2016).

The unresponsive inmate was discovered shortly after 9 p.m.

Sheriff Rick Penning said emergency procedures were initiated and the victim was transported to nearby Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, where the inmate was pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled for today.

The circumstances surrounding the inmate's death are being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI). The state probe is standard procedure when an inmate dies while in custody, Penning said.

Authorities have not identified the inmate.
