Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked an early morning fire that reduced a century-old former church to rubble in Waverly on Monday (Dec. 19, 2016).

Firefighters were called out to battle the blaze around 1:30 a.m. They found the basement of the 114-year-old building fully engulfed when they arrived. The fire eventually spread to the entire structure, causing it to collapse.

Crews remained at the scene for the rest of the morning.

According to fire officials, a passing Waverly police officer first spotted the fire that destroyed the former Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene. They said the current owners were in the process of converting the old place of worship into a home.

No injuries were reported.

At 1:30 p.m., nearly 12 hours after blaze was first discovered, flames could still be seen flaring up from the smoking pile of debris.
