Fast Start Moves Unbeaten Regina Into 2A Semifinals

Iowa City Regina started fast and just kept going -- right into the Class-2A semifinals of the 2016 Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament.

The unbeaten and second-ranked Regals got 27 points from Mary Crompton and beat No. 7 Manson-Northwest Webster 59-47 to complete the 2A quarterfinals Tuesday morning (March 1, 2016).

The victory sends Regina into a semifinal matchup up with No. 3 Unity Christian at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Crompton, another of the state's fine sophomores, scored 13 points in the first quarter to help Regina build a 20-13 lead and the Regals were in control the rest of the way. The 5-foot-8 guard went 5-for-8 from 3-point range, grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists.

Sarah Lehman added 14 points and six rebounds for Regina, while Kennedy Brown grabbed 2 rebounds to go with six points, helping Regina to a 29-19 edge on the boards.

Cloie Herzberg led Manson-Northwest Webster with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Faith Troshynski scored 15 for the Cougars and added three steals.

Regina led by 13 late in the third quarter before the Manson-Northwest Webster mounted a brief charge. Three-pointers by Troshynski and Emma Rae Snell helped the Cougars slice the gap to 47-42, but they got no closer. Crompton answered with back-to-back 3s, starting a 10-0 run that put it out of reach.

Regina, which made it to state for the third time in four years, is now 25-0. Manson-Northwest Webster, a state tourney entry six times in the last 10 years, finishes another strong season at 20-5.
