Dunkerton Will Play For Championship At Boys State Basketball Tournament

Dunkerton really makes the most out of its trips to the Boys State Basketball Tournament. For the third time in school history , the Raiders will play for a championship.

Fourth-ranked and third-seeded Dunkerton advanced to the Class-1A title game with a 53-49 semi-round victory over Belmond-Klemme  Thursday afternoon (March 13, 2014).

The Raiders will play West Lyon of Inwood for the championship at 6:05 p.m. on Friday. The unranked Wildcats are in the tournament for the first time and are the lowest seed in the eight-team field.

Kory Kuenstling recorded a double-double and Trevor Jacobsen scored a game-high 20 points in Dunkerton’s semifinal win. Jacobsen’s three-pointer with 3:00 left in the first quarter put the Raiders ahead 10-9. They would not trail again, eventually building a 16-point early in the third quarter. Kuenstling ended the day with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The last two times Dunkerton qualified for the Boys State Basketball Tournament, the Raiders claimed won a championship. Its most -recent appearance was in 2004, when current Head Coach Mark Brungard made the all-tournament team as a player. Dunkerton won its first title in 1933 and didn’t return to state until 71 years later.

The Raiders take a 27-1 record into Friday night’s title game. West Lyon is 22-5.
