When it comes to the Boys State Basketball Tournament, Dunkerton and Waverly-Shell Rock have one thing in common. Both teams won a championship the last time they made a trip to Des Moines.

The Raiders and Go-Hawks will both be making a return trip to state next week after winning sub-state titles Monday night. Dunkerton will be making its fourth appearance following a 63-58 victory over Jesup in a Class-1A game at Independence. Defending Class-3A champion Waverly-Shell Rock earned the right to defend its title by beating Northeast Iowa Conference rival Crestwood 61-53 in the sub-state final played at Decorah.

The Go-Hawks are going to state for the fourth-straight year and will be making their 16th appearance overall when they face Grinnell at 8:15 p.m. next Tuesday evening (March 11, 2014) at Wells Fargo Arena. Waverly-Shell Rock is 21-3. The Pioneers are 17-7.

Waverly-Shell Rock has advanced to the state title game in three of its previous four tournament appearances, but nine of the Go-Hawks first 10 trips to Des Moines ended with first-round losses. Waverly-Shell Rock won the Class-3A crown in 2007 and finished second in 2011. W-SR also finished second in 1982.

Dunkerton faces East Mills in a Class-1A state quarterfinal game on Monday (March 10, 2014) at 2 p.m. The Raiders are 25-1. East Mills is 17-7.

Dunkerton broke a 71-year tournament absence in 2004 and ended the season the same way the 1933 team did -- by winning the state championship. If the Raiders win the Class-1A title this year, they'll do something that's somewhat unique -- earn a championship in each of three consecutive trips to state.

Ten years ago, Brian Brungard was a star player on Dunkerton's championship team. He earned all-tournament honors as a senior. Linking the past to the present, Brungard is now the head coach at Dunkerton and his hoping to lead the Raiders to the level of success that he enjoyed as a player.
