A downtown Waterloo bridge is scheduled to be closed for the next eight weeks for repairs.

City officials closed the Fourth Street bridge over the Cedar River early today (Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014). Contractors have begun a deck repair and resurfacing project that's slated to be done toward the end of October.

While the Fourth Street bridge is closed for repairs, there is a marked detour. Motorists are being directed to use the Park Avenue bridge, which is one block to the west. The Park Avenue bridge is the only other downtown structure over the Cedar River that has two-way traffic.

During the construction project, the covered pedestrian walkway on the Fourth Street bridge is expected to remain open.

Late last year, the Waterloo city council awarded a $1.2 million contract to Cramer and Associates of Grimes to repair three bridges over the Cedar River. Work on the Fifth Street bridge downtown was completed earlier this year. Construction crews are expected to wrap up similar work on the Conger Street bridge near the National Cattle Congress fairgrounds later this week.
