Dike-New Hartford ended Wapsie Valley's season with a victory in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the Iowa High School State Volleyball Tournament in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2017).

The No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Wolverines (49-3) won the only first-round match-up involving area teams, advancing to the semifinals for the second-straight year by sweeping the Warriors in straight sets. Scores were 25-12, 25-9 and 25-9.

Baylee Petersen led Dike-New Hartford with 22 attacks, 10 kills and 11 digs. Her sister Sydney had a team-high 16 digs. Together, the twin daughters of UNI volleyball head coach Bobbi Petersen recorded 27 of the Wolverines' 47 digs.

Wapsie Valley (21-16) was led by Mikenna Joerger, who ended the afternoon with 26 attacks and five kills. Kaci Beesecker tallied a team-high 13 digs.

It was the second match this season between the North Iowa Cedar League rivals. Dike-New Hartford also won the earlier battle, 3-0, on Sept. 26.

The loss ends the season for the Warriors, who earned their fifth trip to state by stunning seventh-ranked Lake Mills in the regional final. With just three seniors on the roster, Wapsie Valley is looks to be a strong contender in the future.

Dike-New Hartford is the defending Class 3A champion and is in the tournament for the 11th-straight season and 28th time overall. The Wolverines take a shot at winning another title at 4 p.m. Thursday, when they return to the court for their semifinal match.
