Waterloo Columbus Catholic boiled over just when Dyersville Beckman Catholic turned up the heat and tried to mount a dramatic comeback.

The Sailors (34-8) advanced to the Class 3A semifinals of the Iowa High School State Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win over the Trailblazers at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Wednesday morning (June 8, 2017). Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 20-25 and 29-27.

After winning the first two sets, Columbus survived a furious comeback to advance. The Sailors trailed 21-18 in the fourth set when Coach Hanna Nuss called a timeout. Her squad responded after the break, going on a 4-0 run that put Columbus ahead 22-21.

After that, the Sailors fought off two set points before securing the victory over Beckman (31-13). Senior outside hitter Anna Sinnott put the match way, scoring on consecutive kills for Columbus after the set was tied at 27-all.

Sinnott, who entered the tournament leading the 3A field with 4.4 kills per set, ended the day with a team high 30 kills. She had 65 attacks and 16 digs. Junior libero Kate Shannon, who has verbally committed to Iowa State, led the Sailors with 17 digs.

The victory moves Columbus into the semifinals against Osage at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The Sailors are in the tournament field for the third-straight year, but they're competing in Class 3A for the first time. Columbus qualified as a 2A member the past two seasons, finishing second in 2016.
