Semifinals Set at Volleyball State Tournament [Photos]
The 2016 Iowa High School Volleyball State Tournament moves into the semifinal round today (Nov. 10), and seven Northeast Iowa scores are still alive for a a state title in Cedar Rapids.
The Class 5A top-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers dominated their quarterfinal match (see photos) against West Des Moines Dowling Center Tuesday winning 3-0. The Tigers will kick off the slate of semifinal games inside the US Cellular Center at 10:00 AM against Ankeny on Court 1.
The number one rated Union Knights advanced to their Class 3A semifinal game by beating Osage in straight sets (see photos). Next up for the Knights is a strong Mount Vernon team. That match is set for 2:00 PM on Court 1.
The other Class 3A semifinal game features the number two-ranked Dike-New Hartford Wolverines who eliminated Charles City 3-1 (see photos). If the Wolverines can put away Kuemper Catholic, who has only suffered one loss on the year, at 2:00 PM on Court 2. DNH is attempting to join Mount Vernon as the only program in state history to win state championships in three different classes.
If Union and DNH both win, it will create the first of two possible all Cedar Valley showdowns on championship Friday.
Waterloo Columbus upset Sumner-Fredricksburg to advance to today's semifinal match (see photos). The Sailors dropped Game 1 on Wednesday before matching back to win the next three against the Cougars. Waterloo Columbus will face Unity Christian at 4:00 PM on Court 2 for the right to play in the Class 2A championship game Friday.
In Class 1A Janesville and Hudson are still alive, and they could create the other all Cedar Valley showdown. Janseville eliminated the Starmont Stars Wednesday night in straight sets to advance to the semifinal round (see photos). The WIldcats play Holy Trinity Catholic tonight at 6:00 PM on Court 1.
