The Waterloo Black Hawks built up a big second period lead, then held off a Sioux City Musketeers comeback in the third for a 6-3 road win at Tyson Events Center Friday (March 25, 2016).

Scoring opened in the second period, keyed by a Black Hawks power play.  Ronnie Hein had the game’s first goal during an advantage at 2:10 when a Jake Ryczek shot caromed to the Waterloo captain off the end glass.  Six-and-a-half minutes later, Shane Bowers finished off a two-on-one rush after a Georgs Golovkovs pass made it to him across the slot.

On the power play again at 14:22, Zach Yon struck from the right wing circle when goalie Cam Gornet was screened by his own defenseman. Just 38 seconds later, Golovkovs scored from nearly the same spot on the ice when a loose puck came his way in the offensive zone.

The third power play of the period led to a goal for the Musketeers. Following a deflection and Cale Morris save, Mitch Fossier knocked a chance between the posts at 17:16.

Sioux City drew back within one during the third period. Brian Rigali stuffed in a chance at 7:08; less than two minutes later, Conner Valesano came up the rink to fire a shorthanded shot into the top corner.

Hein stemmed the surge, knocking in the rebound of a Ryczek shot at 10:39, just after a power play had ended. Ryan Lohin put the game out of reach, reestablishing a three-goal margin three minutes later on a setup by Golovkos. For Waterloo’s Latvian forward, the assist was his third point of the night.

The Stanley Cup will be at Young Arena when the Hawks return home on Saturday to meet the Green Bay Gamblers. Fans are invited to have their pictures taken with the world’s most sought-after trophy. The Hawks will also wear UNI Panther jerseys presented by Tyson Fresh Meats which will be auctioned after the game, benefitting the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
