The Waterloo Black Hawks grabbed their second win of the weekend Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Jackson Cates, Jack Drury, and Yuki Muira all scored their first United States Hockey League goals Saturday, and the Waterloo Black Hawks led from wire-to-wire in a 9-5 decision against the Sioux Falls Stampede at Sanford Premier Center.

Waterloo raced away to a 5-0 lead in the opening period. The barrage started at 4:26 when Nick Swaney’s cross-ice pass in transition set up Cates from the right wing circle. After a successful penalty kill, the Hawks struck again at 7:06; Kevin Charyszyn put back a rebound chance from a Michael Ferrandino shot.

Garrett Klee trickled the puck through Jeremy Swayman at 9:39, followed by Swaney’s power play redirection at 11:32. With Swayman lifted for Mikhail Berdin, Waterloo cashed in again on a two-on-one rush at 13:12, as Muira set up Emil Ohrvall. The Hawks put 23 shots on net during the opening frame.

During the second, Sioux Falls drew back within four goals three different times. Jack Becker capitalized on a two-on-one at 1:15, but Shane Bowers answered under similar circumstances at 7:45. Although Austin Albrecht knocked in his own rebound during a power play at 9:27, Muira went hard to the net to score at 12:52, reestablishing the five-goal margin. Colin Swoyer added the third Sioux Falls goal on a blast from the right point at 15:49, however Drury sent Waterloo to intermission ahead 8-3, scoring against Swayman, who had reentered the game earlier in the period.

Sioux Falls recorded back-to-back goals in the third. Eric MacAdams put a chance into the net off a Waterloo skate at 9:00. Then Lean Bergmann capitalized on a power play rebound at 11:20.

Muira sent the game out of reach with a Hawks power play conversion at 15:43, batting the puck in out of midair and becoming the only player to score twice in the 14-goal affair.

The Hawks wrap up their current sequence of three straight road games Friday, visiting the Madison Capitols. Waterloo’s next home game at Young Arena is Saturday, October 22nd versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
