Black Hawks Earn Second Win of Weekend in Shootout

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored a second straight win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

Nick Swaney and Ace Cowans scored during regulation, then converted shootout opportunities in a 5-4 Waterloo Black Hawks road victory against the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Mystique Ice Center Saturday.

The shootout was necessary after Dubuque scored twice in the final 3:03 of regulation. Jacob Hamacher received a pass across the slot and fired the puck into an open side during a power play at 16:57 of the third. Dubuque then leveled the contest with an extra attacker on the ice at 18:15, as David Brumm lifted a shot under the crossbar.

Following a scoreless overtime, Swaney notched the first shootout goal, cutting across the slot from left to right and lifting the puck over Jaxon Castor’s left leg. Castor – who had entered the game at the beginning of the third period for Mike Robinson – was beaten by Cowans at the opposite post during the third round of the tie-breaker. Hawks goalie Severi Isokangas stopped both Saints attempts and made 29 saves during regulation and overtime for the win.

For the second time during two weekend games against the Fighting Saints, Garrett Klee scored a first period goal. Klee’s low shot hopped over Robinson’s stick and inside the post to the netminder’s right to break the ice 7:14 into the game. However, the Saints equalized during a power play at 16:04; Taylor Brierley blasted a shot into the net from the right point.

Dubuque took the lead briefly during the second period at 6:55 when Dallas Gerads went to the net to knock in a shorthanded chance in the closing seconds of a Black Hawks power play. Less the two minutes later, Cowans tied it again, batting a puck out of midair as he and linemates Swaney and Shane Bowers all touched the disk in short succession.

At 10:24, Swaney capitalized during a power play to give Waterloo a new lead, knocking in the rebound of Michael Ferrandino’s initial shot. Bowers added to the edge at 16:16, scoring from below the left circle on Cowans’ setup.

Currently atop the United States Hockey League’s Western Conference, the Black Hawks are home for two games next weekend against the Youngstown Phantoms. The Friday and Saturday contests at Young Arena both begin at 7:05 p.m., with $7 advance purchase tickets for college students each night.
