Goals late and early in the first and third periods respectively bumped the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Des Moines Buccaneers 2-1 at Buccaneer Arena on Friday.

The only penalty of the first period was called with a little less than three minutes remaining. After Waterloo’s successful penalty kill, Matej Blumel came out of the box to record the game’s first goal. Blumel came up left wing with a two-on-one look. He intended to take a wrister but was poke-checked at the last moment. Blumel stuck with it, turning in the slot and sweeping a low backhander past Roman Durny.

The Bucs countered with the only goal of the second. Forcing a turnover near their own blue line, Des Moines’ Braden Costello came up the ice on a breakaway and lifted a shot past Jared Moe’s glove.

On the opening shift of the third period, the Black Hawks went back ahead for good. Working the puck deep into the offensive zone, Ben Copeland centered from behind the Des Moines net. Jackson Cates was waiting in the slot and beat Durny with a quick shot.

Waterloo finished the game three-for-three on the penalty kill. Moe made ten saves in the third period and 28 for the night for the win.
