Cedar Falls Traffic Signal Structure Coming Down
The removal of a massive traffic signal structure will force the overnight closure of a segment of University Ave. in Cedar Falls, starting late this evening (Monday, March 27, 2017).
According to a press release from the city, part of the on-going project to build roundabouts on the former U.S. Highway 218 corridor requires removal of the existing traffic signal structure at the intersection of University and Rownd St. City officials said closing the intersection during the least traveled nighttime hours is necessary so workers can safely take the framework down. The structure is mounted diagonally over all six lanes of traffic.
The intersection is scheduled to be closed from approximately midnight to 6 a.m. Tuesday (March 28). Through traffic will not be allowed on University Ave. between Waterloo Road and Cedar Heights Dr. during the closure, while Rownd St. will be shut down between Maplewood Dr. and Pleasant Dr. City officials said local traffic will have to access to homes and businesses during the six-hour closure.
Another phase of the two-year, $32.5 million dollar project is also set to get underway at mid-week.
Starting as early as Wednesday (March 29), construction crews will begin work on the north frontage road of University Ave. between Holiday Dr. and Melrose Dr. To reach businesses, a temporary access will be in place on the west end of the frontage road. The Melrose Dr. intersection will be closed, requiring motorists to use the Blackhawk Village entrance for businesses on the east side of Melrose.
City officials said closures for the frontage road work will be in effect for three to six weeks, depending on the weather.
