An investigation into a deadly explosion at a Cedar Falls motel last month, has determined the incident was a suicide.

The explosion happened October 10th at the Shady Rest Motel, located on Center Street in Cedar Falls. 43 year old Matthew Ferleman was injued in the blast, and later died from his injuries.

An investigation by the Iowa Department of Public Safety's State Fire Marshall determined that the explosion was caused by Ferleman.

Authorities determied that Ferleman blew out the pilot light on a gas appliance in one of the motel rooms the night before, in an attempt to kill himself. He then fell asleep.

When Ferleman woke up the next day, he tried to light a cigarette, causing the explosion.

An autopsy revealed that Ferleman died of thermal injuries, with the cause of death ruled as suicide.

The IDPS released the cause today (Friday).
