Authorities are sifting through the rubble of a popular Northeast Iowa furniture store, destroyed in an overnight fire.

Firefighters from all over Chickasaw County responded to the blaze, called in shortly after 2 a.m. today, to Dungey's Furniture and Floors in New Hampton.

A portion of the main store and a storage building were engulfed when crews arrived. Fire departments from New Hampton, Lawler, Ionia, Fredericksburg, Nashua, Alta Vista and North Washington responded.

Nearby Iowa Highway 24 had to be closed to let crews battle the blaze. Traffic was re-routed through a city park.

An excavator was being used to pull apart remnants of the still-smoldering structure this morning.

A cause has not yet been determined, but according to sources, the origin may have been electrical.

No one was injured.

Owners of the store indicate they had insurance, which should cover the losses. Other business owners have already offered Dungey's some empty buildings in New Hampton, for a temporary location, until they can re-build.

Dungey's also has a store in Osage.

The New Hampton store has been in existence since 1963, a total of 51 years.
