BRISTOL'S PHANTOM YELLOW:

A lot of 'conspiracy' buzz hit Facebook/Twitter when the caution lights suddenly turned in the closing stages of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway this past Sunday.

FoxSports.com reported earlier this week that NASCAR Competition Director Robin Pemberton said the caution lights were turned on by accident.

It appears that in, not all, but most of the flag stands have a manual override for the caution lights, and due to the weather and due to other things, there's an area that it couldn't have been -- it wasn't secured properly, and the flag person leaned against the switch and turned the caution lights on," said Pemberton. "We tried to turn them off, and we realized that the override switch was on and they were hung on caution. It was a stupid error." - - FoxSports.com

This season saw a bumper crop of rookie contenders entered to compete for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year. Although the sole Iowa native Michael Annette is not having a great start, he is putting up a solid first year effort.

Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson seem to be the early front-runners for the rookie championship. Some questioned whether they two were promoted too earlier. The naysayers claim Dillon was born with the NASCAR silver spoon in his mouth – being the grandchild of Richard Childress, and what does Larson, a kid with a dirt track background, know about racing asphalt.

Four races into the 2014 season, both rookies are proving their naysayers wrong. Larson continues to improve each week, capturing his first top 10 at Bristol. He sits six points behind Dillon in the Sunoco rookie standings, who placed 11th at Bristol and ninth at Daytona. Dillon and Larson are 13th and 22nd in the championship standings, respectively, and neither have a series start at this weekend’s venue – Auto Club Speedway.
