Black Hawks Win Opening Night of Iowa Classic

Nine days after the Waterloo Black Hawks suffered a five-goal loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers, a 6-1 rematch victory Thursday, September 18, 2015 during the first game of the 2015 Iowa Classic presented by Luann Gerber and Revolution Realty Team sent the home fans away happy from Young Arena.

In last Tuesday’s tilt, the Buccaneers pulled away from the Hawks with three third period goals, but Thursday Waterloo returned the favor in the opening frame. Shortly after a power play had ended, Tyson McLellan scored the first of three Black Hawk markers. He sent a low shot from the left corner past netminder Jan Ruzika. Waterloo struck again while on a power play at 6:29, as Michael Davies’ shot from the high slot deflected off of a defender and between the pipes. David Cotton capped the period scoring with 1:04 remaining, finishing a two-on-one opportunity, set up by Brandon Schultz, by lifting the puck to the top, short side corner at Ruzika’s right.

In the second, the teams exchanged power play goals. During a two-man advantage at 5:04, the Black Hawks extended their lead to 4-0 when Ben Newhouse rifled a low shot into the net from the top of the left circle. Kenny Hausinger scratched out Des Moines’ lone goal at 12:58, locating a loose puck to the left of Waterloo’s Drew Hotte and putting it in from close range.

The Hawks returned for seconds during the third. Just 3:44 into the frame, Ryley Risling forced a turnover behind the net to set up Davies in the slot for his second goal of the night. Then at 14:05, Cotton recorded his second of the game, batting in the rebound of a Mikey Anderson chance which had caromed off of Ruzika.

Hotte made seven saves during the third period and 18 in the game for the victory.

The 2015 Iowa Classic presented by Luann Gerber and Revolution Realty Team continues Friday with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Sioux City Musketeers facing off at 3 p.m., ahead of the Buccaneers and Dubuque Fighting Saints at 7 p.m. The next Black Hawks game during the event is Saturday at 3 o’clock when Waterloo faces Cedar Rapids.
