Black Hawks Defeat Fighting Saints, 4-2

A goal in every period and an empty-netter to seal it was enough to keep the Waterloo Black Hawks out of reach. The Black Hawks defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-2 on Friday, March 13, 2015 at Young Arena.

There was no advantage after the first period, as the game went to intermission tied at one apiece. The Saints scored first at 7:12; a turnover just inside the Waterloo blue line was the catalyst for Robby Jackson to pass the puck across the top of the crease to Brian Bowen, who was left with an open side. Several important saves from Cale Morris kept Waterloo within one, and the Hawks cashed in on a power play at 17:15. Ronnie Hein’s shot from close range left Henrik Rommel with an open side for a secondary chance, and the Hawks’ Swedish forward didn't miss.

The only goal of the second period was recorded with 22.3 seconds remaining and the Black Hawks back on the power play. Phil Beaulieu fired a shot from the right point, and with a deflection by Hein, it rebounded to Brock Boeser, who flipped it between the pipes.

Nick Swaney scored the goal which proved to be his second consecutive game-winner at 7:18 of the third period. The affiliate forward slung the puck across the goal mouth and it caromed in off of a defenseman, past goaltender Jacob Nehama.

Dylan Gambrell brought Dubuque back within one with 5:21 to play, receiving a long pass at the Waterloo blue line and bouncing a shot in off of Morris’ shoulder. However, Morris stopped the other 11 shots he faced in the third period, and Tyson McLellan scored into the empty net with 6.4 seconds remaining to clinch the win.

Morris made 34 saves.
