Waterloo made a furious comeback in the 3rd period to beat "Dupaco Cowbell Cup" rivals, Cedar Rapids Saturday night in PartyTown.

All of Tommy Hawk's mascot friends came out to celebrate his birthday. They entertained the fans at intermission playing a fun game of "broomball", then the Black Hawks continued to entertain a sold-out crowd to a crazy last nine minutes of the game.

After trailing for more than 51 minutes of Saturday’s game, the Waterloo Black Hawks finished with a late flurry to top the RoughRiders 3-1 at Young Arena.

Cedar Rapids jumped to the lead at 2:10 of the opening period. Jason Polin swept a rink-wide pass from the top of the right circle to the left wing; Aidan McDonough caught the feed in stride and snapped in his shot from near the faceoff dot.

Waterloo out-shot the RoughRiders in each of the first to periods. The Black Hawks were turned away on four power plays in that time, including a five-minute major.

The game turned in a four-on-four situation with 6:36 remaining. Hank Sorensen blasted a shot on net from the left circle. Griffin Ness kept the rebound alive at the top of the crease, and Sorensen – following his shot – received a handoff at the edge of the crease to flip his second shot, under the crossbar.

Waterloo’s fifth power play yielded the winning goal. Matej Blumel’s attempt from the high slot was knocked down, but Xander Lamppa slipped in a follow-up at from just above the crease at 16:13. Solag Bakich added an empty-netter to secure the win with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Logan Stein stopped 19 of 20 shots for the win.

STEIN - USHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Logan Stein was sharp during a pair of appearances for the Black Hawks; the two victories made him the United States Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Stein was pressed into service on Thursday night versus the Omaha Lancers. For the night, he parried 27 of 28 Lancer tries for his tenth victory of the season. The Hawks celebrated a 5-1 win.

Back in the crease for the start Saturday against Cedar Rapids, Stein kept the game close with his 19 saves.

For the weekend, the first-year netminder stopped 95.8 percent of the shots he faced. This season, Stein is 11-3-1 in 17 games.

Monday’s recognition marks the first time Stein has been named USHL Goaltender of the Week. The honor comes after Jared Moe was the award winner last Monday.
