A traffic safety improvement project to add signal lights and left-turn lanes at a busy Black Hawk County intersection is nearing completion.

According to Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) officials, Shaulis Road is scheduled to reopen at Iowa Highway 21 (Hawkeye Road) on Wednesday (Dec. 21). The four-month project on the southern edge of Waterloo, one mile south of U.S. Highway 20, has forced Shaulis Road traffic to follow a marked detour since September.

IDOT officials said when Shaulis Road reopens to motorists on Wednesday, weather permitting, the lighted traffic-control signals will be activated. Currently, digital message signs provide advanced notice to motorists approaching the intersection and will remain in place until Hawkeye Community College is back in session on Jan. 9.
