A Northeast Iowa school is closed today, due to an unnamed safety issue.

Shortly after 10:30 Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2018) night, the Superintendent of the Riceville Community School District in Howard county, announced that school would not be held today (Thursday), because of a safety concern that was brought to the school's attention Wednesday evening.

After Riceville School officials were made aware of the concern Wednesday evening, the superintendent contacted the Howard County Sheriff. Because of the potential seriousness of the situation, school officials and the sheriff decided that cancelling school for the day would be the best course of action.

An urgent message was sent to parents Wednesday night, announcing the decision to close school due to the safety concern.

The Howard County Sheriff continues to investigate the incident, and school officials would update parents, students and staff as more information becomes available.

The school will be posting any updated details on their district website, on Facebook, and Twitter.
