Hundreds of Waverly residents woke up in the dark this morning. (Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016).

Nearly 1,500 customers of Waverly Utilities lost power about 4:54 a.m. when a car struck a utility pole and cut the mast in half, said company spokeswoman Jen Bloker. The accident happened on 20th St. NW by the 5th Ave. NW curve near the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

According to Bloker, the damaged pole feeds electricity to much of northwest Waverly. She said it took Waverly Utilities crews about 45 minutes to reroute power and isolate the broken pole.

Bloker said a majority of the affected customers had their electricity restored by 5:40 a.m. and the rest by 6:25 a.m. The outage affected about one-third of the 4,800 customers taht Waverly Utilities serves.

According to Waverly police, the woman involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.
